Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp

Sachsenhausen was a concentration camp (not primarily a death camp, our tour guide made the difference clear) about 35km north of Berlin. Mark and I went on a tour of the camp, and our tour guide was very informative.
Right in front of the camp entrance looking back towards town. The guards of the camp used to live in the houses immediately surrounding the camp.

Entrance

Most of the buildings were destroyed after the camp was liberated.  Some buildings were accurately reconstructed, and many are symbolized by the rectangular slabs of rock. Only a few of the buildings are original.

One of the reconstructed barracks.

After the Russians liberated the camp in 1945, they only memorialized the communists who were killed. It wasn't until the 90's that most of the factions of people were recognized (Jews, homosexuals, ....)

Medical facilities. Since this was primarily a work camp, the medical facilities were primarily used to  keep the workers healthy.
